According to a letter from state investigators, it may take until late summer or longer until the investigation into the March 9 Greenwood gas explosion is complete.
Businesses coping with the aftermath of the blast called the delay frustrating.
“It’s difficult for small business owners to have to deal with that,” said Chris Maykut, owner of Chaco Canyon Café.
Maykut said the lack of information from investigators has made filing insurance claims difficult for those who suffered the most damage, especially the owners of Neptune Coffee and Mr. Gyros, which were wiped out by the blast.
“They’re like, ‘We don’t know what to do, no one will tell us what’s going on and we can’t move forward with our lives, or move on from this,’” Maykut said, having heard from other owners.
In response, the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission wrote a letter explaining it “does not release detailed information about ongoing investigations until a final report is filed in order to prevent misinterpretations of isolated facts … At this time, we hope to have a completed report by late summer…”
A UTC spokeswoman said important lab tests are still being done, and the commission continues to keep the insurance companies posted with an updated timeline. She also said insurance companies often work with people prior to the completion of an investigation.
Maykut said he has worked with his insurance company because his claims were minimal. However, he said he has heard the bigger claims are waiting for more information from the investigation.
