SOUTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV.com) -An expert says problems with gas pipes in a South County subdivision is emblematic of a wider problem across the country.

Residents on Mango Drive say they have noticed recent work by Laclede Gas on their street. The work started in December, 2015 when a home filled with gas exploded, Laclede Gas said.

A gas pipe became broken when tree roots seeped gas underground into the home.

Since that time, residents say Laclede Gas has been in the neighborhood repairing pipes and checking. One ongoing project is too look for more pipes invaded by tree roots.

Natural gas investigator Mark McDonald said what is happening on Mango Drive is indicative of a larger problem.

“We’ve built up essentially a ticking time bomb where gas explosions are happening on a regular basis,” said McDonald.

The utility said it is involved in other projects to replace underground gas pipes in the St. Louis area.
