Gas Companies’ Failure to Disconnect Service at Vacant Homes May Violate Federal Law

A massive natural gas explosion in Cleveland, Ohio destroyed one home and caused more than $1 million in damage to 65 other area properties. Natural gas company policies that allow gas to continue flowing to vacant properties may violate federal law, which requires the flow of gas to be completely cut off.

An Aug. 20 natural gas explosion at a pipeline owned by Enable Midstream Partners, a subsidiary of CenterPoint Energy and Enogex, left a 20-foot crater and lit up a nearby barn.
