A major natural gas gathering pipeline owned and operated by the Williams Companies ruptured earlier today in West Virginia, according to recent media reports, just days after the company rejected safety recommendations from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in connection with controversial new natural gas pipeline of similar diameter proposed for New York City.

The National Transportation Safety Board, the agency charged with investigating natural gas pipeline explosions, released some videos explaining the circumstances surrounding the notorious San Bruno blast, which killed eight and destroyed an entire neighborhood in the San Francisco suburb in September 2010. If you’ve got some time, they’re worth watching.

Federal pipeline safety watchdogs have cited a natural gas subsidiary of TransCanada, the corporation behind the controversial Keystone XL pipeline, for alleged inadequacies in the company’s Operator Qualifications Plans and Procedures, according to documents obtained by NaturalGasWatch.org.
