Williams Transco Seeks Permission to Harass Sea Creatures in Rockaway Pipeline Build-Out

This North Atlantic Right Whale, or another like it, will be harassed by sounds and vibrations emanating from the construction of a new, off-shore natural gas pipeline proposed by Williams Transco. The new line, known as the Rockaway Lateral Line, would run through wetlands and recreation areas in coastal New York City, bringing shale gas from the Marcellus Shale play into Brooklyn via a pipeline to be built under Flatbush Ave.

Williams Transco, the natural gas company proposing to build a massive, new natural gas pipeline through wetlands and recreation areas in coastal New York City, has asked federal regulators for an exemption to existing wildlife protection laws to “harass” a range of marine life during the pipeline’s construction, according to documents obtained by NaturalGasWatch.org.
